X wing solo (not Solo) game

I thought I'd give the X-wing solo rules a go. This would be my second gaming experience in the lockdown and I'm currently won 0, lost 1!

Before we start, excuses.

As previously mentioned I do not have enough of the new 2.0 stuff(dials and cards) to run a double faction game and as it seems not enough low level stuff (only two torrents) to do a inter-faction battle either.
I have therefore decided to use 2.0 rules but with 1.0 dials and ship cards. This involves my only two rebel ships as the player set, and my larger Empire will be the AI.

Rules seem to be quite straightforward, a few charts and things to bounce between so random set up is as follows

Working through the first few rounds carefully to make sure I don't miss anything and its going well. Turn four is when the second wave appears,

And things are going well,

Turn 7 is when the next wave appears but I'm worried I'll get there in one piece

Goodbye to my I4 ship

My wing-man doesn't seem to be pleased with my decisions,

Well he's on his own now.....

Turn 7 and here they come

Xwing looking bleak.jpg

It's a tense final dog fight and the mechanics are working very well. I'm impressed, especially when two enemies manage to barrel roll out of my fire arc in the same turn!

Its not to be and eventually I succumb to the lowly (well he has a higher I than me) Tie Fighter.

All in all I thought the AI mechanics ran very well, I'm going to laminate the move charts onto one sheet for ease of use along with the behaviours.
Next up the two N-1's might get a run out.

I see you dice rolling hasn't improved in lockdown then... :D

Your wing-man's look says it all.

The joys of playing solo and still getting beat.

I could argue my red dice were on fire, but as in all solo games they all seem to favour the AI. Take Mike and your Negan games for example.

His look was priceless.

As it is the hottest day of the year painting is a no go so I've had a second go at the solo rules.

This time I will be pitting the Jedi and clones against the might of the Empire. (If I squint they could be Separatist droid ships.)

I also have a new opponent so I am testing if cats or dogs are more evil.

I have the very basic Jedi Starfighter and the slightly better ARC Gunship

Set up as before and this time both of the starter Ties were on the further hyperspace portal. Dials are loaded, we will begin.

Literally the first dice in anger and I realize it's going to be one of those games.

My opening salvo,

and their first attempt,

Talking dice and ARRBL randomness, this was a fun turn for the AI,

As mentioned before game does suit the single player aspect. It took a long time before the first ship was removed and dice were keeping both of us alive. At the end of the first phase, that is end of turn three, the Jedi had one wound remaining and the ARC was untouched. The Empire had both active, both of which were damaged.

It was a very close game physically as well, at one stage every ship bumped into another object!

At the end of the second phase the ARC had taken some damage and two Ties had been removed. Here come the aces...

I would say I took control when I removed a Tie and the Interceptor, but that would be a big lie as the Interceptor took himself out of the game by failing three asteroid collisions one after the other.
