I’ve tried a javelin thrower in the past as a cheap ranged option but they weren’t massively impressive.

I’ve nothing non-standard now but like Simon a Captain is high in the purchase list as they are both fun and effective.

Wizards don’t pay for equipment anymore right? So I can give my Wizard a two handed weapon for free?

Yes, and yes (remembering a 2h weapon takes up 2 slots).
