Rules Q on Damage and Saving Throws

Postby Dave » Tue Nov 17, 2020 7:30 pm

If a one wound model is killed but that model has an ability to ignore wounds how many “saves” does that model have to take from a Damage 2 weapon?

Example: A Battle Sister with the order of the Valorous Heart Heart has an ability to ignore wounds on a 6+. Let’s say she is hit by a Heavy Bolter (a damage 2 weapon) and fails her power armour save. Does she now roll two d6, both needing a 6, in order to ignore the wound?

Cheers

What's the wording of the ability?

Pretty sure the answer is going to be 2 but would need to know the wording to be certain

The ability says “when a model with this conviction would lose a wound, roll one d6, on a 6 that wound is not lost”.

I can’t find anything explicit in the main rules but I am leaning towards having to roll 2.

It's 2 rolls because the damage 2 weapon causes the model to lose 2 wounds.

Yeah I’m inclined to agree, my confusion came from the bit about one wound models that lose more than one wound ignore any excess damage.

Cheers.

I think the idea is that they ignore excess damage, not excess wounds, and wounds only turn into damage after failing that 6+ roll. Maybe.

That makes sense to me. Attacks from a D2 weapon would apply a wound, the 6+ would negate it leaving room for the second point of damage to apply the wound. The model then either survives or dies on the next 6+ roll

But maybe roll the dice separately? If the first wound killed a model, wouldn't the second point of damage roll over into another model in the squad?

I don’t think “unspent” Damage rolls over to another model (pg 221, para 5).

So a Heavy 3, D2 Weapon, like the heavy bolter, can only ever kill a maximum of 3 models.

Yes, you're right. Allocate hits to models, they receive wounds equal to the damage

Don't have the main book to hand so wasn't sure.
