Heresy Army Painting Challenge

Postby Dave » Mon Jun 26, 2023 3:55 pm

I've set myself the task of painting a 3,000 point heresy army by the time Ray returns on the 29th August.

It turns out I have way more of the current MKIII kits than I originally thought (magic attic strikes again). I've said it before, they are great looking models but they just don't mix well (to my eye anyway) with the newer infantry kits, so having enough for a standalone army is ideal.

I've also been wanting to try out oil washes for quite sometime and so combining the two ideas I've decided on Iron Warriors.

Here is the first 167 points.....I think I need to paint the bolter casing black but I really like the metallic look, it's just perhaps too much metal on one model.

They look good and suitably grimy! The guns might stand out a bit more in black, but if you're going for speed then they look good as they are.

In my heart I know you're right! I'll paint one black and see how I like it.

Love the grime.

Agree with Ben, it needs a colour to give a contrast. Paint the guns red/black

Iron Warriors without the 'dangerous man with an even more dangerous gun' health and safety hazard stripes. You heathen.

I also love this mark and wished I had more of them. Good start.

I’ve painted a single Bolter casing and it does look a bit better.

I might do some very small areas (a knee pad or gauntlet) with the hazard stripe motif but if I do I’ll do them all at the end, my goal is to get them to a tabletop and playable standard.

I was actually gonna suggest that as an idea for if you finished ahead of schedule!

Good thing about your scheme is you don't have to have super crisp lines on the stripes as any imperfections can be easily disguised with grime/as battle damage

Very nice and grimy - are the death guard you were working on now sulking to have been pushed down the queue?

I’m up to about 1,000 for the Dusk Raiders/Deathguard, turns out the scheme isn’t as quick to replicate as I first thought! It is also a mainly infantry army whereas the Iron Warriors will have lots of tanks and Dreadnoughts.
